A memorable visit to the sugar city of Lautoka

                       By Elia Vesikula

I joined two of my grandchildren on the streets of Lautoka early October 2020 in Lautoka in the west of Fiji. We visited the streets, feeding the homeless living on the streets. Our main focus is to spread the word of God to the home less on the streets.

It was a touching, humbling and a time that taught us to love more like Jesus. We took sandwich tuna prepared by my daughter Vilavi Waqa. She is an inspiration.

We took tea in a yurn donated by Fiji Australian resident living in Sydney, Buna Leitabu and we are thankful for her familys’ contribution. Although she has been away from Fiji she still contributes in a big way for the spread of WORD of God in Fiji.

I joined my two grand children. They are 5 year old Tu and  and 14 year old Junior Nemani Waqa. They helped distribute the food to the street dwellers or the homeless in our towns. My job is to share the WORD of God where we can. There are different reasons that people come out and live on the streets. Some do not have a home, all are unemployed and some are mentally challenged most do not have a home accept the streets.

We would stop by where they are lying down to try and sleep on hungry stomachs. It would have been a tiring day for them, looking for food. Their belongings packed in empty sugar bags by their side. The bag would have all their belongings in their whole life here on earth. They have cardboard as their mattress and their bag of clothes as their pillows.

As we pull up on the side walks they would come close knowing that the meal for the day is here. Dressed in old dirty torn clothes they call out with a forced "cola vina' (Ba greeting) walking towards the two boys TU and JU who are ready to give out their meals.

We offer a short prayer thanking the Lord and share the food and a hot cup of tea. All the time there is not enough food for all of them. We feel sorry for those that miss out but we try and be back next night so that they have something to eat.

Along the cause of tea we share about the love of Jesus for them and they would respond in agreement saying yes its Jesus. We thank the Lord for giving us an opportunity of serving these wonderful children of God. Please have a heart for them if you can contribute. We have feeding program in Suva, Lautoka and Nausori. We hope to extend to other towns in Fiji.
